ACLL TEAMS UP WITH ALLIANCE DEFENDING FREEDOM TO DEFEND FREE SPEECH AT UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA AT HUNTSVILLE
January 18, 2023
BIRMINGHAM, AL – On Friday, January 13, the Alabama Center for Law and Liberty (“ACLL”) agreed to serve as the local law firm for a free-speech lawsuit brought by Alliance Defending Freedom (“ADF”).
In 2021, ADF sued the University of Alabama at Huntsville (“UAH”) on behalf of the university’s Young Americans for Liberty (“YAL”) chapter and the chapter’s president, Joshua Greer. The lawsuit claims that UAH’s student-speech policy violates Alabama statutory law and the Alabama Constitution’s guarantee of free speech. After the trial court dismissed the lawsuit, ADF appealed to the Alabama Supreme Court. The Alabama Supreme Court reinstated the case 9-0.
ACLL filed a friend-of-the-court brief arguing that the Alabama Constitution’s guarantee of free speech protected YAL even more than the Federal Free Speech Clause. Chief Justice Parker publicly commended ACLL’s efforts to discuss the state constitution in a special concurrence.
“I am incredibly honored that ADF would ask ACLL to partner with it as its local law firm in this case,” said Clark. “ADF has done an excellent job defending free speech across the country at different colleges, and we look forward to advocating for YAL together in this case.”
ACLL is a conservative nonprofit legal organization based in Birmingham, Alabama, and it is the litigation arm of the Alabama Policy Institute. For more information, visit ACLL’s website at www.alabamalawandliberty.org.
